“It is a pleasure to launch this Newsletter with the news of considerable movement in our quest for a Demonstration and Research Marine Protected Area in Fair Isle waters. Indeed the momentum has moved from advocacy in favour of the project to preparing a framework for a programme of demonstration and research which meets the objectives of the community and those set by the Scottish Government’s Marine Scotland. The opportunity is there to innovate ways of achieving sustainable management of the marine environment and benefiting the many coastal communities reliant on that resource.

This newsletter highlights the immense amount of effort put in by the islanders and their partners in 2014. It has been a hectic twelve months. We envisage an equally busy time in 2015 though with the emphasis switching to development of a plan to which everyone can sign up.

There is no room for complacency, however. The signs are promising, as outlined in this latest newsletter, but we are still dependent on a signal to proceed by Marine Scotland. “
